Roadway Corridor Projects

What is a Major Transportation Corridor Study?

Major Transportation Corridor Studies, also known as Major Investment Studies (MIS), are a critical step in the comprehensive metropolitan transportation system planning process undertaken by the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO). Under federal metropolitan planning regulations, major corridor studies are required to support decisions on substantial transportation investments. These corridors are evaluated from a regional perspective and may include recommendations to construct new or enhance existing freeways, toll roads, high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes, managed lanes, and light rail or commuter rail facilities. This process also serves as a bridge between the regional planning process and the more detailed project design and engineering phases. There are many cooperative parties involved with the North Central Texas Council of Governments in the MIS process. In the North Texas region, these partner transportation agencies include, but are not limited to, the Texas Department of Transportation, Dallas Area Rapid Transit, the Fort Worth Transportation Authority, and the North Texas Tollway Authority.

The results of these studies are incorporated into the metropolitan transportation plan as appropriate.
