NCTCOG tracks and monitors the performance of the 27 National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS) airports in the North Central Texas region. The region has 2 commercial service, 11 reliever, and 14 general aviation airports. All 27 airports are owned by their respective cities.
These airports were chosen because they are significant to national air transportation and thus eligible to receive Federal grants under the Airport Improvement Program (AIP).

An inventory was taken of the 27 airports in the FAA's National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS) in the North Central Texas region. The region has 2 commercial service, 11 reliever, and 14 general aviation airports. All 27 airports are owned by their respective cities.
These airports are significant to national air transportation and thus eligible to receive Federal grants under the Airport Improvement Program (AIP).
Texas General Aviation Airports provide more than 56,000 jobs, with $3.1 billion in payroll and $14.6 billion in total economic output. Airport Operations includes the total number of arrivals and departures from a given airport. The annual airport operations in North Central Texas remained relatively stable in 2013, compared to the previous year. Total annual operations rose 1.2% with an increase in itinerant operations and a slight decrease in local operations.
Regional Annual Airport Operations
The region had 2,101,866 operations from the 27 airports in the FAA's National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS). NPIAS airports include all commercial service, all reliever, and selected general aviation airports.
These airports are significant to national air transportation and thus eligible to receive Federal grants under the Airport Improvement Program (AIP).
- Local Operations are performed by aircraft that remain in the local traffic pattern, execute simulated instrument approaches or low passes at the airport, and the operations to or from the airport and a designated practice area within a 20−mile radius.
- Itinerant Operations are performed by an aircraft that lands at an airport, arriving from outside the airport area, or departs an airport and leaves the airport area.

Airports with Instrument Approaches
93% of the airports in the region have an instrument approach, which aids pilots in landing during times of low visibility.
There are two main Instrument Approach Classifications:
- Precision approaches utilize both lateral (localizer) and vertical (glide slope) information.
- Non-precision approaches provide lateral course information only.
For aircraft that operate under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR), an instrument approach is a series of predetermined maneuvers for the orderly transfer of an aircraft under instrument flight conditions from the beginning of the initial approach to a landing.
