Preventing Stormwater Pollution: What We Can Do
Municipal Employee Training Resources
The “Preventing Stormwater Pollution: What We Can Do” video and accompanying Stormwater Pollution Prevention Training Module Series are tools to assist local governments and state agencies in training their employees on Stormwater pollution prevention. The following sections contain descriptions of the training resources. Links are provided at the bottom of the page to access files for each of the training resources.
Instructor’s Guide
An Instructor's Guide is available to assist trainers in conducting their training programs. The Guide contains permit language, tips for preparing training sessions, overview information and talking points for the video and training modules, and a form for documenting training.
Presentations and documents from the "Training the Trainer" session held June 30, 2010 are also available at the bottom of this page. Materials offered include the "Storm Survivor" and "What's Wrong With This Picture" games.
Preventing Stormwater Pollution: What We Can Do Video
The Municipal Employee Training Series “Preventing Stormwater Pollution: What We Can Do” (total of 6 videos) provides information on Stormwater pollution, possible Stormwater pollution impacts from municipal, county, or state government operations, and basic Best Management Practices (BMPs) for preventing Stormwater pollution in various municipal operations.
The video series is available as a digital download for $85.00 from NCTCOG’s Environment and Development Department. To purchase the video set, and for any additional information, please email EandD@nctcog.org or call (817) 695-9210.

Training Module Series and Shop Posters
The Training Module Series consists of six PowerPoint presentation modules that supplement the training objectives of the Preventing Stormwater Pollution: What We Can Do video. The trainer may use the modules to provide more detailed training on pollution prevention BMPs for various activities carried out by government entities.
The modules are designed to follow the video or an introduction by the instructor. One or more modules may be presented in combination depending on the audience. In addition to the flexibility offered by various combinations of modules, the content of individual modules may be tailored by the jurisdiction to meet locality-specific needs. For example, pictures, contact information, Stormwater Best Management Practice (BMP) maintenance and inspection schedules, waste disposal instructions, or other facility-specific information may be used in place of or in addition to the standard content.
Shop posters have been developed to accompany each training module. The posters may be placed in shops or break rooms to reinforce the practices described in the video and training modules.
(Note: In 2015, the Pollution Prevention Task Force developed a new template for 13 tabloid (11" x 17") posters entitled Do Your Part -- Keep Pollution Out of Storm Drains & Ways. This template is available under "NCTCOG Resources" on the Pollution Prevention Program webpage.)
Supplemental Materials
“Training the Trainer” presents tips for the trainer on preparing for and conducting training sessions. This presentation was developed for the train-the-trainer workshops conducted in August 2005.
“Storm Survivor” is a quiz that may be used in a training class to reinforce and assess student learning. The game contains questions and answers pertaining to the video and each of the training modules. If individual assessment is desired, the questions from the game may be used by the trainer to prepare a written quiz that may be administered after the class.
“What’s Wrong with this Picture” is another useful aid the trainer may use to stimulate group discussion. This presentation file consists of photographs of poor Stormwater management practices. Notes describing the problems associated with the photographs are provided (select “Notes Page” under the View menu in Microsoft PowerPoint to view the problem descriptions and print the Notes pages prior to presenting the game). In addition to the “serious” photographs, several “fun” photographs are interspersed throughout the presentation to keep the interest level high.
