Regional Stormwater Monitoring Program

Through an RFP process, PBS&J (in association with Freese and Nichols; Arredondo, Zepeda and Brunz; and TTI Environmental Laboratories) were awarded a contract to assist the smaller entities of Arlington, Garland, Irving, Plano, Mesquite, TxDOT-Dallas and NTTA with field collection and analysis of stormwater samples during this second five-year program term. Dallas and Fort Worth used their own staff to collect samples. The regional monitoring plan called for the quarterly sampling of up to three monitoring stations in each of the nine watersheds per year for three years beginning January 1, 2007. 

Goal

To establish baseline data on receiving streams in the DFW Metroplex for use in determining long-term water quality trends. Identification of these trends will be used to define MS4 BMP design criteria and, eventually, evaluate BMP effectiveness.

Participants

Cities of Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington, Irving, Plano, Garland, and Mesquite, and two transportation agencies—Texas Department of Transportation-Dallas District and North Texas Tollway Authority

Sampling Details

Three sites in seven watersheds and two sites in two transportation watersheds were sampled each year for three years (2007, 2008, and 2009); one sample was collected per site per quarter (January to March, April to June, July to September, and October to December). A total of 300 samples were collected and 27 watersheds were evaluated over the program term.

Each sample was analyzed for the following 18 parameters: oil/grease, pH, E. coli, total coliforms, total dissolved solids, total suspended solids, biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, dissolved phosphorus, total phosphorus, diazinon, total arsenic, total copper, total cadmium, total lead, total zinc, and total chromium.
